Ash Wednesday Service – Afternoon
February 17 @ 12:15 pm - 12:35 pm
“How can we have Ash Wednesday during a pandemic?”, I hear you say. How can we NOT have Ash Wednesday during a pandemic? It’ll be a little different though. We’ll meet outside for three short services, for no more than 25 minutes each. I won’t preach outside, but instead I’ll record a sermon and some prayers to compliment our outdoor services and help those who just can’t worship in person right now. Instead of taking the ashes, mixing them with holy oil, and smudging them on your forehead, I’ll sprinkle them over our heads. Apparently this is common in Europe and a more ancient practice.
[. . .] This year, we will walk away with itchy, dirty asked that no one else will be able to see. We might make our way to the grocery store with our uncomfortable mask and our uncomfortable ashes; we might just go right home, with the discomfort of wishing we could go to a restaurant for lunch. And no one will know but us. No one will know we are practicing our faith, except by the way they see us live.
– The Rev. R. Allen Pruitt, “Lent is for Christians“
Services will be held outside near the pavilion. There is a limit of 40 people per service.
Sign up online or call the office at 706-884-8911.
In case of inclement weather, changes will be communicated via email.
UPDATE AS OF 02/02/2021: In order to follow the guidelines presented by the Diocese of Atlanta, our plans for the service have slightly changed. There will still be a 25 minute service, but instead of sprinkling ashes over everyone’s head, the traditional ashes and cross will be applied to individual cards for attending parishioners.
